Pollen collection

There are two pollen collections: Reference Pollen Collection (from plants) and Pollen collected by bees.

Reference Pollen Collection

Today, the reference pollen collection consists of 158 species / morphotypes of plants, distributed in 39 families. Most species are representatives of the cerrado and montane grassland of the Espinhaço Range.

It was made three reference slides of each pollen type after acetolysis process.

The pollen types were photomicrographed and classified according to pollen unit and size according to Kearns and Inouye (1993): very small pollen grains are <10 micrometres. small 10-25, medium between 25-50, large between 50-100 and very large between 100-200 very large.

The pollen types is available in an online pollen catalog, which contains information about the pollen type and plant species in the reference pollen collection. Information about flowering period and habit of the species were obtained from field observations. The botanical information on the occurrence of the species were obtained from the design of the List of Plant Species of Brazil, currently belonging to Reflora Program (Species List flora of Brazil Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro Available at: <http://floradobrasil.jbrj.gov.br/>).
